Go-go on 5th Street NE

Residents I would like to bring to your attention the recent emergence of a Go-go in our community. Robert Brannum of the 5D CAC brought the venue to my attention earlier this week. I have since tried to contact the group behind the flyer below but to no avail. The building they are hosting the "She Taste Just Like Candy" event in tonight is the former Good Ground Good Life office located at 1915 5th Street NE. The event is open to all ages and ends at 12am. I have received no prior notification of this event or any plans to have a weekly go-go at this location as the flyer indicates.

As many residents know the area near this building has been the home to shootings, robberies and a open air drug market in the 4th Street corridor, and we seem to finally be making progress in cleaning it up. While the specifics of the event and future plans are limited, Go-go's in general are known to draw large crowds and violence at times which is a combination for disaster in this area. This may or may not be the case for this event but the operator has already made a major misstep by not alerting the community of their plans.

Per DCRA's PIVS system the building was issued a certificate of occupancy for a office which means they can not legitimately operate an event venue. I will continue to investigate and update the community on this building and any future events. I ask that residents also let their voice be heard on this issue.

Recent Shooting on T St Closed With Arrest

SHOOTING IN FRONT OF MCKINLEY HIGH SCHOOL CLOSED WITH ARREST!!!!

On Friday, February 4, 2011, at approximately 1600 hours, a male juvenile subject was traveling in the 300 block of T Street NE when a male suspect exchanged words with him and then fired several rounds in his direction.  The victim was subsequently struck in the leg and treated at an area hospital.  This shooting was not school related, neither the victim nor suspect are students.

On Tuesday, February 8, 2011, at approximately 2030 hrs, Fifth District Vice officers received information that the suspect was in the area of T Street NE , they responded and arrested the suspect after conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle they observed him occupying.  A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a 9mm handgun with an extended clip.   Once arrested the respondent was debriefed by Det. Fultz, and charged with the February 4th shooting!!

Eckington Civic Meeting Tonight

ECKINGTON CIVIC ASSOCIATION

February meeting this Monday at 7pm

Harry Thomas Community Service Center
1741 Lincoln Rd NE

We will hear from Leila Batties regarding the Washington Gateway PUD modifications.
The planned changes would replace the hotel with apartments and a limited amout of retail.

This is a outline of the plan from the Washington Gateway:

1.  A hearing has not yet been scheduled with the Zoning Commission.  We have submitted our prehearing statement and are hoping to go to hearing on March 7.

2.  Pursuant to ZC Order No. 06-14A, construction on the project must commence no later than June 29, 2012.

3.  The Applicant has made the following monetary contributions to the community in connection with the approval for the development of the site: (i) $50,000 to the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities for an arts-related project for the Florida Avenue underpass; (ii) $25,000 to City Year to cover the 5-year operating costs for the Young Hero Programs; (iii) $10,000 to Emery Elementary School Student Activity Fund for field trips, educational celebrations, audio/visual upgrades and technology upgrades; (iv) $10,000 to the Harry Thomas Community Service Center for the purchase and installation of a new scoreboard; (v) $5000 to North Capitol Main Street for the development of a database of the commercial/retail properties in the service area.

Additionally, the developer will make improvements to the New York and Florida Avenue sidewalks, provide retail uses, and make significant upgrades to the Metropolitan Branch Trail.

4. From a site development and design standpoint, the plan is very similar to the plan that was previously approved.  The developer is essentially trading hotel units for dwelling units.

There will also be an update on the relocation of Emery Education Center across campus to the former Langley Jr. High building. DCPS plans to close the Shaed School in Edgewood and combining those student with the student from Emery.

We plan to talk about the up tick in shootings around the community and related safety issues.

There will be a community update from ANC Commissioner Pinkney. Ms Pinkney will also introduce Mr. Chickaro Martin, the founder of Project Fitness.

Pass the word and join us this Monday. The community you want is only as good as the community you build.

Shooting Near McKinley Tech

A teenage boy was shot Friday around 4pm near McKinley Tech on T Street. The victim sustained non-life threating injuries. At the time I arrived on the scene it was unclear if the teen was a student of McKinley or not. MPD has been working some solid leads in the case and hopefully they can identify and arrest a suspect soon.

If residents have any information regarding this incident do not hesitate to contact MPD.

Adult Bus Tokens Will No Longer Be Sold.

After February 28, 2011, adult bus tokens will no longer be sold.
Adult bus tokens are being phased out to modernize and streamline the fare payment system for Metrobus.

Bus tokens will continue to be accepted on Metrobus (and other regional buses), so you can use the ones you already have.

Student bus tokens will still be sold.

After January 31, 2011, MetroAccess will stop accepting bus tokens and paper farecards.

A SmarTrip® card is even more convenient than a bus token!

It’s Metro’s permanent, reusable plastic farecard. It costs just $5, but it saves you money every time you use it. That’s because you pay 20¢ less per ride AND you take advantage of transfer discounts that you can’t get paying with cash. They’re sold at all CVS/pharmacy locations and select Safeway and Giant stores. Or to find other sales outlets including transit stores, visit MetroOpensDoors.com or call 202-637-7000.

Have You Joined Capital Bikeshare?

As our community continues to grow it's important that we utilize alternative means of transportation to decrease the amount of cars on the road and in our residential parking areas. A great way to do this is by joining Capital Bikeshare. I'm a huge fan of Capital Bikeshare and I use it regularly to commute back and forth to work. Capital Bikeshare allows you to access 1,100 bikes at 110 locations in DC and Arlington Virgina. Capital Bikeshare has several membership options and the first 30 minutes are always free.

With the completion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail and several easily accessible stations Capital Bikeshare gives residents a fun and cheap travel alternative. I encourage every 5C05 resident to give Capital Bikeshare a try in the near future.

Visit the Capital Bikeshare website for more info.  http://www.capitalbikeshare.com/

DC SNOW TEAM PREPARES FOR THE SEASON’S LATEST WINTRY MIX
Snow, sleet, freezing possible between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
DCPS plans to open on time Tuesday, February 1.

(Washington, DC)  The DC Snow Team will mount a full mobilization of more than 200 vehicles on their routes at 11 pm Monday, in anticipation of the wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain predicted for tonight.  This deployment will focus on spreading salt on roadways.  The forecast calls for light, intermittent snow, sleet and freezing rain starting around 11 pm, then changing to rain Tuesday.  The temperature at midnight tonight is expected to be around 29F and 34F by midday Tuesday.

DC Public Schools plans to open on time.  However, parents should continue to watch news and media reports or check the DCPS website (http://dcps.dc.gov/) for the latest information and updates as the weather progresses through the evening and early morning hours.

The Snow Team asks residents and property owners to treat their sidewalks with abrasives, e.g., non-clumping kitty litter, tonight, which can make clearing the sidewalks a little easier once the storm ends.
Residents and travelers are reminded to:
·         Take Metro as an alternative to driving.
·         Drive only if it is absolutely necessary.
·         If you must drive, drive cautiously and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles.
·         Keep a safe distance from emergency and snow vehicles and please use caution when attempting to pass a snowplow. Give the drivers plenty of room to safely do their jobs.
·         Clear sidewalks of snow and ice within 24 hours of the end of a snow/ice storm.
·         Be aware of hazardous road conditions, particularly black ice which can be deceptive in appearance and give the driver a false sense of security on the road.
·         Keep your gas tank full.
·         Clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle’s hood, roof, windows and lights before driving.
·         Drive carefully on bridges, ramps and other elevated structures, which can freeze before the roadway.
·         Have an emergency “go-kit” in your car. Visit http://www.hsema.dc.gov/ to learn how to make your go-kit.
